in a Jar Not quite a century ago, the American beauty business was nothing more than a handful of mail order companies. Today, its a 39 billion dollar-a-year industry. How did lipstick, powder and paint, once viewed as immoral and unrespectable, become such an essential part of women's lives? BEAUTY IN A JAR, a feature length documentary broadcast on A&E March 21, 2003, explores the social, racial, sexual and political history of American beauty culture. Following the compelling and inspiring stories of Elizabeth Arden, Madame C.J. Walker, Helena Rubenstein, Max Factor, Estee Lauder and Charles Revson, BEAUTY IN A JAR traces the birth of American beauty culture and examines what beautifying means to women and American life. Along the way, the film examines the changing beauty ideals of the past century. On-camera interviews include: Helen Gurley Brown, John Epperson (Lypsinka), Iman, Leonard Lauder, Debi Mazar, Kathy Peiss, Linda Wells, and Naomi Wolf. Credits Purchase Video |
